Out and About Challenge 2023 – Make a Splash
This year our Out and About Challenge is all about making a splash!
With summer just around the corner, it is time to enjoy the warmer weather by having fun and adventure with water. What’s more, you can explore your local area, learn more about the wildlife and support charities who work with water.
We know that getting outside is so important for young people. It gives them an opportunity to boost their creativity, soak up the sunshine, and improves sleep and mental wellbeing. Through this badge we hope you learn something new about water and make some new friends whilst splashing about!
How does it work?
There are three different sections for this badge.
- Discover water
- Fun with water
- Adventures with water
To earn the badge, please complete 1 activity from Discover water and at least 1 activity from the Fun or Adventures with water sections.
You can adapt the suggested activities to fit in with your unit and local area.

Dashing Duck Competition
Why do ducks fly south for the winter? It’s too far to waddle!
Add an extra splash of creativity and adventure to your Out and About challenge this year by taking part in our shop’s Dashing Duck competition.
For your chance to be a lucky duck and win £10 worth of shop vouchers, get your rubber duck from our shop and enter 1 or both categories below.
Categories
Each category is split into 3 age ranges – Rainbows and Brownies, Guides and Rangers, and adult members. There will be a winner chosen for each age range in each category.
- Most creative duck – Decorate your duck, give them a personality, get as inventive as you want!
- Most adventurous duck – In the spirit of the Out and About challenge, take your duck on an adventure and snap a picture of your duck doing something daring!
How to enter
Email a picture of your dashing duck to web@girlguiding-scot.org.uk and make sure to let us know which category and age range you are entering in. The competition closing date is 30 September.
Competition terms and conditions
- One entry per person per category
- Entries must be submitted by midnight on 30 September 2023
- Entries must be submitted by email
- Only our Make a Splash ducks bought from the Girlguiding Scotland shop can be entered
- Please don’t leave your ducks behind when you’re out and about and make sure not to disturb any wildlife or the environment while taking part
- Please keep safe around water, it is essential that you take note of the environmental and safety precautions in the Make a Splash activity pack
