A new Ranger unit has been able to open and offer local girls a range of exciting opportunities in the Highlands & Islands.
Girls from 1st Halkirk Rangers have been able to enjoy a campfire cookout, take part in kayaking and in a high ropes course, as well as attend Cally Rally (an annual Scouts activities weekend) since the unit was opened in February 2024.
This was all made possible by the Friends of Girlguiding Scotland New Unit Grant, which enabled the unit to open a lot quicker. 5 girls are currently enrolled in 1st Halkirk Rangers, with space for a further 15, and it is supported by 3 volunteers.
Unit leader Gemma Harrison said: “According to the Rangers, their favourite highlights were doing the Be Well – What’s the Logo unit meeting activity. They enjoyed it so much they then took the lead at a session with the Guides and explained how to play the game. They also enjoyed the Know Myself – Campfire Cookout unit meeting activity. They loved making dampers as this is not something they would get the opportunity to do at home. The grant also enabled the girls to receive the supplies they needed to start working towards their programme awards.”
Ranger, Katie, said: “What being in Rangers means to me is meeting new people when going to camps.” Another Ranger, Aimee, said: “Staying in Girlguiding has meant a lot to me as it’s allowed me to learn lots of new things and make new friends.”
Ranger Ella commented: “Girlguiding means a lot to me because I love being part of it and really enjoy all the fun camps, exciting activities and the friendships I’ve made along the way.” And Evie added: “Girlguiding means a lot to me as it has given me confidence to do new things and has helped me meet new people and friends.”
New and re-opening units can apply for the Friends of Girlguiding Scotland New Unit Grant of up to £250. This funding is available to help new units get started and covers essential items such as first aid kits, promise badges for leaders and girls, craft materials, sports equipment and guiding uniform.
Since the fund launched in March 2024, almost £6,000 has been awarded to 26 units. The new units supported by the fund have created 429 new girls’ spaces.
